Gettysburg Address
Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. 改革開(kāi)放以來(lái),我國(guó)的英語(yǔ)教育規(guī)模不斷擴(kuò)大,教育教學(xué)取得了顯著成就。然而受應(yīng)試教育的影響,學(xué)校教育仍普遍存在重考試成績(jī)輕口語(yǔ)交際能力的現(xiàn)象。為適應(yīng)新課程改革提出的“從生活經(jīng)驗(yàn)和認(rèn)知水平出發(fā),發(fā)展學(xué)生的綜合語(yǔ)言運(yùn)用能力,使語(yǔ)言學(xué)習(xí)的過(guò)程成為學(xué)生形成積極的情感態(tài)度、主動(dòng)思維和大膽實(shí)踐、提高跨文化意識(shí)和形成自主學(xué)習(xí)能力的過(guò)程”要求[1],我校多年來(lái)在英語(yǔ)教育教學(xué)過(guò)程中組織學(xué)生積極參與各種形式的課外實(shí)踐活動(dòng),提高學(xué)生的英語(yǔ)綜合運(yùn)用能力。筆者主要談?wù)勛约核趯W(xué)校在創(chuàng)建外語(yǔ)特色學(xué)校的過(guò)程中,為提高中學(xué)生英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力而開(kāi)展的一系列課外活動(dòng),以及這些活動(dòng)的活動(dòng)所產(chǎn)生的影響。
一、提高中學(xué)生英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力的課外活動(dòng)研究的背景
筆者所在的學(xué)校自創(chuàng)辦以來(lái)就非常注重英語(yǔ)特色學(xué)校的建設(shè),一方面是為了適應(yīng)課程改革的需要,另一方面是為了不斷積累英語(yǔ)特色辦學(xué)的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。在十多年的實(shí)踐過(guò)程中,我們不斷嘗試各種有效的活動(dòng)方式體現(xiàn)辦學(xué)特色。尤其在課外實(shí)踐活動(dòng)中,我校和社會(huì)各方面密切合作,開(kāi)展多種多樣的活動(dòng),培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的聽(tīng)、說(shuō)、讀、寫(xiě)能力。在眾多的課外實(shí)踐活動(dòng)中,學(xué)生最感興趣的就是提高英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力的活動(dòng)。自2011年7月我校開(kāi)始籌備到進(jìn)入研究江蘇省教育科學(xué)“十二五”規(guī)劃課題的“外語(yǔ)特色學(xué)校創(chuàng)建中的英語(yǔ)教學(xué)輔助活動(dòng)研究”以來(lái),我們對(duì)能提高中學(xué)生口語(yǔ)交際能力的幾個(gè)行之有效的課外活動(dòng)進(jìn)行了長(zhǎng)期的跟蹤研究。
二、提高中學(xué)生英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力的主要課外活動(dòng)的選擇
根據(jù)近年來(lái),學(xué)校的課堂教育中仍然存在只注重學(xué)生英語(yǔ)知識(shí)的輸入而忽視學(xué)生英語(yǔ)能力輸出的傳統(tǒng)頑癥,我們?cè)谡n外活動(dòng)的選擇上更注重以提高學(xué)生英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力為主的活動(dòng),同時(shí)顧及時(shí)間和場(chǎng)地的利用,學(xué)校、家庭及社會(huì)有關(guān)機(jī)構(gòu)的合作等。所以我們選取的活動(dòng)形式時(shí)主要從三個(gè)方面考慮:一是便于學(xué)校和家庭,以及社會(huì)合作機(jī)構(gòu)的操作,二是既聯(lián)系學(xué)生生活又促進(jìn)學(xué)習(xí),三是成為學(xué)生人生成長(zhǎng)中的寶貴經(jīng)歷。我們選定兩種主要的形式作為研究對(duì)象:一是英語(yǔ)演講,二是涉外交流。
英語(yǔ)演講最能體現(xiàn)學(xué)生的英語(yǔ)水平和口語(yǔ)交際能力,因此英語(yǔ)演講是提高學(xué)生口語(yǔ)水平的新途徑[2]。進(jìn)入21世紀(jì),隨著國(guó)際間交往的日益頻繁,高水準(zhǔn)的口頭表達(dá)能力和演講能力成為人們?cè)谏婧透?jìng)爭(zhēng)中制勝的“法寶”和“殺手锏”,較高水平的口頭表達(dá)和交流能力是現(xiàn)代社會(huì)對(duì)人才的一項(xiàng)基本且重要的要求[3]。所以我們通過(guò)組織學(xué)生積極主動(dòng)參與校內(nèi)外各種英語(yǔ)演講比賽,促進(jìn)學(xué)生主動(dòng)加強(qiáng)聽(tīng)力能力和口頭表達(dá)能力的訓(xùn)練,鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生大膽擺脫“啞巴”英語(yǔ),努力學(xué)習(xí)“有聲”英語(yǔ),提高英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力。
涉外交流是我們?cè)谔厣k學(xué)過(guò)程中不斷發(fā)展起來(lái)的一種有效的、影響更廣的課外活動(dòng)形式。涉外就是和外國(guó)人有交流,學(xué)英語(yǔ)的最終目的就是用英語(yǔ),在我國(guó)長(zhǎng)期的英語(yǔ)教學(xué)過(guò)程中,中國(guó)學(xué)生幾乎沒(méi)有和外國(guó)人交流的經(jīng)驗(yàn)。隨著經(jīng)濟(jì)全球化步伐的進(jìn)一步加快,國(guó)際的跨文化交際日益頻繁,單純學(xué)習(xí)語(yǔ)言知識(shí)而不了解中西方文化的差異,無(wú)法達(dá)到有效交際的目的[4]。我們通過(guò)涉外交流活動(dòng),把外國(guó)專(zhuān)家、學(xué)者、學(xué)生、社團(tuán)請(qǐng)進(jìn)來(lái),派遣我校老師、學(xué)生走進(jìn)外國(guó)大學(xué)、中學(xué)、家庭體驗(yàn)外國(guó)文化,增強(qiáng)學(xué)生的跨文化意識(shí),提高學(xué)生的口語(yǔ)交際能力。
三、提高中學(xué)生英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力的課外活動(dòng)的具體實(shí)踐
經(jīng)過(guò)多年的實(shí)踐,我們已經(jīng)固定下來(lái)并一直在實(shí)行的演講活動(dòng)有:校內(nèi)演講、校外演講。涉外交流合作形式有:和英美中學(xué)結(jié)締友好合作學(xué)校、訪問(wèn)英美文化夏令營(yíng)、邀請(qǐng)英美學(xué)者來(lái)校講學(xué)、邀請(qǐng)外國(guó)留學(xué)生舉行英語(yǔ)座談。
(一)英語(yǔ)演講比賽活動(dòng)具體實(shí)踐。
1.舉辦英語(yǔ)演講指導(dǎo)講座。首先,通過(guò)學(xué)校英語(yǔ)俱樂(lè)部,組織主動(dòng)積極參與英語(yǔ)演講活動(dòng)的學(xué)生在學(xué)校禮堂收看英語(yǔ)演講視頻,如《21世紀(jì)全國(guó)中學(xué)生英語(yǔ)演講視頻》、《CCTV希望之星英語(yǔ)風(fēng)采大賽》等,讓學(xué)生在觀看全國(guó)中學(xué)生演講比賽視頻的過(guò)程中產(chǎn)生參與英語(yǔ)演講的熱情。然后,學(xué)校教務(wù)處安排老師做專(zhuān)題講座,從演講稿的選題立意、論據(jù)收集、謀篇布局、措辭運(yùn)用、語(yǔ)言修改、演講道具到英語(yǔ)演講中的語(yǔ)音語(yǔ)調(diào)、音高、語(yǔ)速、停頓、重音、聲音的抑揚(yáng)頓挫及節(jié)奏感的把握,再到面部表情、眼神、手勢(shì)等技巧的運(yùn)用及情感控制等方面進(jìn)行詳細(xì)的指導(dǎo)。
2.舉辦校內(nèi)演講比賽。每學(xué)期在學(xué)校內(nèi)舉行一次主題演講比賽。學(xué)校教務(wù)處英語(yǔ)教科室結(jié)合學(xué)生的實(shí)際選定主題,如my home,school life,my problems等,給學(xué)生一周的時(shí)間,由英語(yǔ)老師指導(dǎo)修改演講,在班級(jí)進(jìn)行預(yù)備演講和篩選,最終確定參與學(xué)校比賽的學(xué)生名單,一個(gè)班級(jí)一個(gè)名額。在全校演講比賽的日子,全體師生共同參與,共同欣賞學(xué)生的精彩演講。學(xué)校根據(jù)比賽成績(jī)表彰獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)演講優(yōu)秀的學(xué)生。
3.組織校外演講比賽。我校近年來(lái)與中國(guó)日?qǐng)?bào)社“21世紀(jì)杯”全國(guó)中小學(xué)生演講比賽江蘇組委會(huì)合作,組織學(xué)生參加“21世紀(jì)杯”全國(guó)中小學(xué)生演講比賽。學(xué)校在每年10月份接到比賽組委會(huì)演講主題通知后,布置各英語(yǔ)老師在班上進(jìn)行宣傳,鼓勵(lì)同學(xué)積極報(bào)名,自愿參與,并對(duì)本班同學(xué)的演講稿認(rèn)真篩選,確定本班參賽人員名單。教科室再統(tǒng)計(jì)全校參賽人數(shù)并進(jìn)行核對(duì),將參賽人的名單、聯(lián)系方式、指導(dǎo)老師等資料統(tǒng)一打包上交大賽組委會(huì)。教師組織這些學(xué)生每周集中培訓(xùn)一次,不斷提高演講口語(yǔ)表達(dá)能力。每年我校有數(shù)十名學(xué)生進(jìn)入復(fù)賽和數(shù)名同學(xué)進(jìn)入江蘇省決賽。
(二)涉外交流活動(dòng)的具體實(shí)踐。
根據(jù)交往的形式,我們將涉外交流活動(dòng)分為單向型和雙向型。單向型主要是由我校組織學(xué)生前往英美國(guó)家的文化單位學(xué)習(xí),了解西方國(guó)家的文化?;蚪邮苡⒚绹?guó)家友好學(xué)校或其他團(tuán)體來(lái)我校訪問(wèn),傳遞我們的文化。雙向型主要是我校和英美友好學(xué)校建立互助關(guān)系,互派學(xué)生交流學(xué)習(xí)。
1.單向型涉外交流的具體實(shí)踐。
主要形式是夏令營(yíng)這是提高學(xué)生口語(yǔ)交際能力的主要涉外交流活動(dòng)之一。每年暑假學(xué)校組織學(xué)生到英國(guó)和美國(guó)進(jìn)行學(xué)習(xí)交流活動(dòng)。學(xué)生居住在英國(guó)或美國(guó)家庭中,和家庭主人共同生活兩周時(shí)間,在這兩周的時(shí)間里,學(xué)生還走入社會(huì),和當(dāng)?shù)鼐用窠涣?,走訪當(dāng)?shù)貙W(xué)校和文化單位,學(xué)習(xí)英美文化。通過(guò)夏令營(yíng)的實(shí)踐活動(dòng),學(xué)生的口語(yǔ)交際能力大大提高。
另外,邀請(qǐng)?jiān)趪?guó)內(nèi)的外籍學(xué)生和老師到本校和學(xué)生舉行交流聚會(huì)。如2013年1月10日下午,美國(guó)伊利諾伊大學(xué)厄本納-香檳分校師生一行18人來(lái)我校訪問(wèn)交流。在每學(xué)期兩次的聚會(huì)中,學(xué)生大膽開(kāi)口,嘗試用英語(yǔ)表達(dá)自己的想法,學(xué)會(huì)了和外國(guó)友人交流。
2.雙向型涉外交流的具體實(shí)踐。
雙向型的涉外交流活動(dòng)主要是和聯(lián)誼學(xué)校合作,互派交換學(xué)生。這是一種長(zhǎng)期而有效的提高學(xué)生口語(yǔ)交際能力的方式。2012年10月18日,我校與美國(guó)North Cross學(xué)校締結(jié)成友好學(xué)校。雙方都安排學(xué)生到對(duì)方學(xué)校學(xué)習(xí),為不斷提高學(xué)生的口語(yǔ)交流能力創(chuàng)造良好的外部條件。返回學(xué)校后的外派學(xué)生又促進(jìn)本校同學(xué)的英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交流能力。當(dāng)然這樣的活動(dòng)不僅需要學(xué)校專(zhuān)項(xiàng)研究經(jīng)費(fèi)的支持,還需要本地經(jīng)濟(jì)實(shí)體的大力支持。
四、提高中學(xué)生英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力的課外活動(dòng)的積極影響
有效組織英語(yǔ)演講和涉外交流活動(dòng),有助于充分發(fā)揮每個(gè)學(xué)生的潛能,培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的創(chuàng)新精神和實(shí)踐能力,促進(jìn)學(xué)生個(gè)性的健康發(fā)展,完善學(xué)生的綜合素質(zhì),提高學(xué)生實(shí)際語(yǔ)言運(yùn)用能力。所以這兩種形式的課外活動(dòng)主要有以下積極影響:
(一)對(duì)提高學(xué)生口語(yǔ)交際能力起到了明顯的促進(jìn)作用。在演講比賽活動(dòng)中,學(xué)生為了展示自己的口語(yǔ)表達(dá)能力,加強(qiáng)訓(xùn)練,不斷模仿和強(qiáng)化地道的英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)表達(dá)習(xí)慣。通過(guò)視頻觀看,班級(jí)模擬練習(xí),以及參賽者的集中訓(xùn)練,提高了學(xué)生的語(yǔ)境適應(yīng)能力,調(diào)動(dòng)了學(xué)生練習(xí)口語(yǔ)的積極性,同時(shí)增強(qiáng)了開(kāi)口用英語(yǔ)表達(dá)的自信心。在跨文化交流活動(dòng)中,學(xué)生表現(xiàn)得更為好奇和積極。為了能將自己所學(xué)的在英語(yǔ)環(huán)境中表達(dá)出來(lái),和地道的英美人士進(jìn)行實(shí)地交流,學(xué)生更加注意培養(yǎng)自己的語(yǔ)言表達(dá)能力。在現(xiàn)實(shí)交流中學(xué)生會(huì)碰到語(yǔ)言交流中的差異,在發(fā)現(xiàn)差異和適應(yīng)差異的過(guò)程中學(xué)生不斷地修正自己的表達(dá),從而提高自身的口語(yǔ)交際能力。通過(guò)參加這些活動(dòng),學(xué)生更加認(rèn)識(shí)到提高英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)交際能力的重要性。
(二)通過(guò)舉辦這些活動(dòng),促進(jìn)了學(xué)生自身全面發(fā)展,符合課程標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的要求。英語(yǔ)演講和涉外交流活動(dòng)為學(xué)生提供展示自我、挑戰(zhàn)自我的平臺(tái),創(chuàng)造互相交流和學(xué)習(xí)的機(jī)會(huì)。學(xué)生在英語(yǔ)演講活動(dòng)和涉外交流活動(dòng)準(zhǔn)備階段,通過(guò)搜集整理有關(guān)資料,擴(kuò)大知識(shí)面,培養(yǎng)自主學(xué)習(xí)能力;在英語(yǔ)演講和涉外交流活動(dòng)進(jìn)行中,通過(guò)大膽開(kāi)口、積極思維,提高心理素質(zhì),發(fā)展批判性思維習(xí)慣的形成,以及批判性思維能力[5],為學(xué)生終身發(fā)展積累一定的寶貴經(jīng)驗(yàn)。
(三)通過(guò)組織這些活動(dòng),促進(jìn)了校園文化的建設(shè)。英語(yǔ)演講和涉外交流活動(dòng)是外語(yǔ)特色學(xué)校創(chuàng)辦過(guò)程中所實(shí)施的課外教學(xué)輔助活動(dòng)的一部分,學(xué)生積極參與這些活動(dòng),為學(xué)校營(yíng)造濃郁的英語(yǔ)文化氛圍,展示蓬勃向上的精神風(fēng)貌,凸顯外語(yǔ)特色學(xué)校的特色,促進(jìn)我校相關(guān)課題研究的順利進(jìn)行。同時(shí)在組織這些活動(dòng)中,英語(yǔ)教師隊(duì)伍整體專(zhuān)業(yè)素質(zhì)得到了提高,為學(xué)校的可持續(xù)發(fā)展創(chuàng)造了良好的外部環(huán)境。
總之,在英語(yǔ)特色學(xué)校創(chuàng)辦過(guò)程中,通過(guò)組織演講比賽和涉外交流等課外活動(dòng),在激發(fā)學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)興趣和提高學(xué)生的口語(yǔ)交際能力方面的確起到了積極的促進(jìn)作用。教師和學(xué)生在這些活動(dòng)中所都出的努力也有了很大收獲,但是在今后的學(xué)校發(fā)展過(guò)程中,為了更好地適應(yīng)課程改革的需要,還要不斷優(yōu)化此類(lèi)活動(dòng)的開(kāi)展,讓更多的學(xué)生參與其中,為學(xué)生提供更多實(shí)踐舞臺(tái),為以后跨文化交流打下基礎(chǔ);為教師提供專(zhuān)業(yè)提升機(jī)會(huì),為教師拓寬教學(xué)視野;為學(xué)校的可持續(xù)發(fā)展開(kāi)辟更加寬廣的道路,促進(jìn)中西方學(xué)校相互間的交流與溝通。
